Working Groups
DDEX currently maintains twelve active Working Groups or Ad hoc Groups which are made up of member representatives from the Charter and Full Members of DDEX. The Working Groups meet regularly by teleconference and in-person to develop, maintain, and update the DDEX standards, and assist with their implementation. Below is the list of current active Working Groups and Ad hoc Groups with their mandates for activity (as of May 2024).

Anomaly Reporting Working Group (AR)
- Develop and maintain any standard message formats and choreographies by which companies can report to their business partners any anomalies they have identified which may, or may not, be an indicator of suspicious behaviour;
- Complete such standards and choreographies in respect of consumer interaction and supply chain anomalies;
- Assist interested parties with any Anomaly Reporting implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the Anomaly Reporting standard(s) with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the Anomaly Reporting standard(s);
- Create samples and documents for the knowledge base for the Anomaly Reporting standard(s); and
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the Anomaly Reporting standard(s).
Digital Sales Reporting Working Group (DSR)
- Maintain and further develop the DSR standard for reporting of sales/usages to owners and/or administrators of musical works and sound recordings;
- Maintain and further develop the CDM standard for communicating right share claims in respect of musical works;
- Assist interested parties with DSR and CDM implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the DSR and CDM standards with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the DSR and CDM standards;
- Create samples and documents for the knowledge base for the DSR and CDM standards; and
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the DSR and CDM standards.
Electronic Release Notification Working Group (ERN)
- Maintain the ERN, MEAD and PIE standards as well as the Catalogue Transfer (CT) standard and best practices;
- Assist interested parties with ERN, MEAD, PIE and CT implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the ERN, MEAD, PIE and CT standards with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the ERN, MEAD, PIE and CT standards;
- Create samples and documents for the knowledge base for the ERN, MEAD, PIE and CT standards; and
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the ERN, MEAD, PIE and CT standards.
Music Recognition Technologies Working Group (MRT)
To investigate the metadata requirements for the communication between record companies, music publishers, CMOs, distributors, DSPs and companies offering music recognition services for various purposes by focusing on:
- Ensuring that all relevant topics relevant to other WGs is being fed back where appropriate;
- The provision of audio files and associated metadata for MRT services to establish the “correct” identity of resources from various sources;
- Assist in providing a solution to binding assets with such “identity metadata”, and the communication of entity relationships to interested parties;
- Communicating material concerning metadata discrepancies detected by MRTs;
- Communication between MRT services and recipients of their messages to resolve those audio and metadata discrepancies;
- Communications from MRT services indicating the identification of music resources “in the wild” not previously identified; and
- Providing blueprint messages for other WGs to enrich their standards.
Musical Works Data and Rights Communication Working Group (MWDR)
- Maintain MWN, MWL, LoD and BWARM standards;
- Develop and maintain suitable standards for the communication of complex data about musical works throughout the value chain (which may be or be based on the MWN, MWL and LOD standards);
- Assist interested parties with MWN, MWL, LOD and BWARM implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the MWN, MWL, LOD and BWARM standards with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the MWN, MWL, LOD and BWARM standards;
- Create samples and documents for the knowledgebase for the MWN, MWL, LOD and BWARM standards; and
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the MWN, MWL, LOD and BWARM standards.
NFT/Web-3 Working Group (NFT)
- Develop and maintain the “Simple Music NFT” standard;
- Collate and document additional use cases for the communication of data about music-related NFTs;
- Investigate the data requirements for such communication;
- Assist interested parties with NFT implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the NFT standard(s) with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the NFT standard(s);
- Create samples and documents for the knowledge base for the NFT standard(s); and
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the NFT standard(s).
Party Identification and Description Working Group (Party)
- Document requirements for the identification and description of parties in all DDEX standards to enable efficient and consistent collation, communication and use of such metadata across the music industry value chain;
- Work with all messaging WG and AhGs to develop technical solutions and/or operational processes to meet these requirements;
- Work with the International Standard Name Identifier International Agency, to further the music industry’s requirements for the operation of the standard and to assist ISNI-IA in encouraging music industry players are conforming to the standard’s terms and operational requirements.
- Create, where appropriate with other organisations, educational material to support the aforementioned technical approaches, including best practice documents and physical workshops;
- Reach out to other media sector organisations to exchange and/or align solutions; and
- Work with SCAPR on the dissemination of IPNs.
Recording Data and Rights Working Group (RDR)
- Maintain the RDR standards;
- Assist interested parties with RDR implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the RDR standards with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the RDR standards;
- Create samples and documents for the knowledge base for the RDR standards;
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the RDR standards; and
- Continue to review the adoption and use of all parts of the RDR standard by continuing regular RDR surveys against the baseline set in 2023.
Studio Working Group (Studio)
- Maintain the RIN standard;
- Create a dictionary of colloquially used terms in the studio environment associated with their “DDEX equivalent”;
- Assist interested parties with RIN implementation activities;
- Encourage conformant implementation of the RIN standard with the widest possible adoption within the relevant community, worldwide;
- Consider any AI developments and their impact on the RIN standard;
- Create samples and documents for the knowledge base for the RIN standard; and
- Develop and maintain conformance tools for the RIN standard
Venue Identification and Description Working Group (Venue)
- Support the DDEX secretariat and DDEX board in evaluating the proof of concept currently being implemented; and
- Conducted jointly with EIDR.
Artificial Intelligence Ad hoc Group (AI)
To investigate the metadata requirements for the communication of AI-generated music, focusing on all types of creations (including musical works)
Standards Enhancement Ad hoc Group
- To investigate how DDEX can enhance its standards and make them easier to understand and implement for all types of companies;
- Make recommendations to the Plenary or Board as appropriate as to what action, if any, should be taken by DDEX relating to these issues; and
- Identify any other general topics about which DDEX could act to improve the creation, maintenance and implementation of its standards.
