Membership

Membership of DDEX is, in accordance with the Operating Agreement, open to any organisation “with a business interest in digital media content”. Becoming a member of DDEX means you are shaping the digital future. Although anyone can implement the standards, becoming a member of the DDEX consortium allows organisations to participate in and influence the development of future international standards in the digital value chain. There are four categories of membership: Charter, Full, Full Individual and Associate.

Charter Members

Charter Members are entitled to:

  • Appoint a named individual as a Director to the Board
  • Send one or more individuals to attend any of the technical Working Groups’ meetings and have access to all documentation and communications relating to those meetings
  • Propose an individual to act as Chair or Co-Chair of each Working Group, for appointment by the Board
  • Provide comments on a Committee Draft Standard as set out in the standards development process
  • Send one or more individuals to each Plenary Meeting and have access to all documentation and communications relating to those meetings
  • Send one or more individuals to each Annual Meeting and have access to all documentation and communications relating to such a meeting
  • Be granted a free Implementation Licence and allocated a DDEX Party Identifier

The annual fee for Charter Members (effective from 1st January 2025) is $29,378. There are additional criteria for becoming a Charter Member which include:

  • The applicant must have been a Full Member for at least one year and it can be shown that it has actively participated in the relevant DDEX technical work activities during that time
  • The applicant must be sponsored by three existing Charter Members that represent at least two of the sectors on the Board
  • The applicant shall have implemented for use in production mode at least one of the DDEX standards or has made a proposal for the development of a new standard
  • The applicant must be in good standing with regard to the claiming and licensing of rights in musical works or sound recordings to rights users and/or the obtaining of licences and flow of royalties to owners of musical works or sound recordings
  • A sub-committee of the Board, will appraise to what extent the applicant satisfies these conditions, against an objective set of criteria and make a recommendation to the Board
  • Once a positive recommendation has been received by the Board, the application is then subject to a super-majority vote, that is, requiring 80% of the Board to vote in favour
Full Members

Full Members are entitled to:

  • Send one or more individuals to attend any of the technical Working Groups’ meetings and have access to all documentation and communications relating to those meetings
  • Propose an individual to act as Chair or Co-Chair of each Working Group, for appointment by the Board
  • Provide comments on a Committee Draft Standard as set out in the standards development process
  • Send one or more individuals to each Plenary Meeting and have access to all documentation and communications relating to those meetings
  • Send one or more individuals to each Annual Meeting and have access to all documentation and communications relating to such a meeting
  • Be granted a free Implementation Licence and allocated a DDEX Party Identifier

Full Member fees are based on revenue bands, where revenue is defined as the income received for the last full financial year ending before the date of the Full Member joining DDEX for the first time or renewing its membership, which are finalised and available, that is in any way attributed to the exploitation of or the provision of services relating to any type of media content and/or any rights associated with media content.

The annual fees for Full Members (effective from 1st January 2025) are as follows:

Full Individual Members

Full Individual Members are entitled to:

  • Attend any of the technical Working Groups’ meetings and have access to all documentation and communications relating to those meetings
  • Propose themselves to act as Chair or Co-Chair of each Working Group, for appointment by the Board
  • Comment on a Committee Draft Standard as set out in the standards development process
  • Attend each Plenary Meeting and have access to all documentation and communications relating to those meetings
  • Attend each Annual Meeting and have access to all documentation and communications relating to such a meeting
  • Be granted a free Implementation Licence and allocated a DDEX Party Identifier

Full Individual Members are generally “sole-traders” who may have several clients with an interest in DDEX and its standards. Whilst these individuals may be associated with a limited company, the individual would normally be the only employee. Once that ceases to be the case the company is required to become a Full Member at the relevant annual fee above.

The annual fee for Full Individual Members (effective from 1st January 2025) is $291.

Associate Members

Associate Members are entitled to:

  • Receive all documentation and communications relating to each Working Group, but not participate in any Working Group meetings
  • Provide comments on a Committee Draft Standard as set out in the standards development process
  • Pay in advance $500 per individual (which shall be waived for the first year) to send them as observers to one Plenary Meeting in any one membership year for the first three years of that membership and have access to documentation and communications relating to the Plenary Meeting
  • Receive any reports created setting out the proceedings and decisions made at a Plenary Meeting
  • Send one or more individuals to each Annual Meeting and have access to all documentation and communication relating to such a Annual Meeting
  • Be granted a free Implementation Licence and allocated a DDEX Party Identifier

The annual fees for Associate Members (effective from 1st January 2025) is $2,942.
